Festivals large and small, weekly music “jam” sessions, art exhibits, theatrical performances and town tours are just a few ways in which we celebrate life. And of course, with our mild climate, hunting and fishing, biking and camping are year-round activities made easy with our many wildlife management areas and scenic bayous and byways.
You’ll be amazed by the hundred-year-old oaks that shade our historic communities and grace the gardens that are lovinglytended by our residents. Efforts to retain that beauty are ongoing today with restoration projects and support of our local farmers’ markets.
St. Landry Parish, one of the oldest settlements in Louisiana, was established as an administrative territory by the French government in 1720. After the 1803 Louisiana Purchase this area became know as Imperial St. Landry Parish, named after an early bishop of Paris. With its dramatic history and diverse culture, this area of Acadiana boasts une différence (a difference) which few places in America can claim. The settlers over three centuries have produced the rich and colorful experience that is St. Landry Parish today. We are proud of our history that still heavily influences our daily lives. We delight in sharing our joie de vivre (joy of life).
Here in St. Landry Parish eating is considered both a cultural and a recreational experience and great meals can be found at diners open since 1937, local gas stations that serve daily plate lunches, or fine dining in very unique settings. And with a little help from next door, you’ll be cooking etouffée and mastering a roux in no time!
From active civic groups and firmly rooted religious communities, you are sure to be welcomed with open arms! And should you decide it’s finally time to take that course in photography or to learn that new computer program, continuing education is available through a university campus and a technical college, conveniently located right here in St. Landry Parish. And who knows, that hobby could just turn into a second career! Being centrally located in Louisiana, also makes St. Landry an affordable place to call home, with lower homeowner’s insurance rates and the State offered Homestead Exemption and Special Assessment programs designed to reduce property taxes. Should medical needs arise, the caring folks at our quality healthcare facilities ranging from major geriatric critical care and trauma, will be there for you and your family.
